Clivis Publications presents a new book:

SAXOFONCROMATICO. Chromatic progression exercises for the improvement of the fingering techniques in all the Saxophone registers.

168 years after it was invented, the saxophone is now an essential instrument in jazz, light, popular, and contemporary music and, of course, it has also taken a leading role in serious music in recent decades. The saxophone now has a repertoire of more than 10,000 original and symphonic compositions.

Which this work based on the chromatic scale, is to contribute a little of my modest knowledge so that saxophone professionals wishing to improve and enhance fingering techniques throughout the instrument’s range will find here the possibility of achieving this. Antonio Juárez Bayón.

"Nocturno Sevillano" by Agusti Borgunyó performed by the Barcelona Orchestra

The composer Agustí Borgunyó (1894-1967), from 1934 he worked for Alfred Wallenstein (who would later be the director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra) who asked him to compose pieces with the Hispanic flavour that had become so popular following the international success of Manuel de Falla. During that period and with this objective, Borgunyó composed the Suite per a viola, which included a movement entitled Gitanerías, and other works with a clearly Hispanic air, such as Danza ibérica, Nocturno sevillano or the Suite ibérica.
This work, alongside Don Juan by Strauss and Pictures at an exhibition by Mussorsky will be interpreted by the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National under the baton of Eiji Oue, the next 21, 22, 23 and May 25 at the Auditorium of Barcelona. You might also hear the same program 26 in Tarragona, 27 Lleida, Girona and finally to 28 on June 11 in Valencia.

The premiere of the Suite for Orchestra by Lluís Benejam, Orchestra Barcelona and Catalonia directed by James Judd at L'Auditori in Barcelona, on 15, 16 and January 17, 2010 proved a remarkable success.

"The attraction of the concert was the Suite Benejam Lluís (1914-1968), Catalan composer emigrated to the U.S., in a move that also involved Xancó, Suriñach (cellist). A piece of plain language, and some American sounding Hollywood tinge, with fantastic resources and above all rhythmic and melodic color, culminating with a Spanish touch sensitive. The funny thing is that we know so little about this musician. The program fails to date the date of this work, where is find your file? We are in a very hazy memory of our little systematic exercise and recovery, something essential for a self-respecting culture. What do we expect? "

It is available in music stores, the new edition of Sonata 1 Benejam Lluís, and Transcriber Victor Manuel Morales says in the prologue ...
After tackling the transcription for flute of Sonata nr. 1 for violin and piano (1951) by Lluís Benejam, I have carefully revised the first edition together with this one, comparing them with the facsimile in order to avoid errors and clarify certain passages that were open to doubt (very few actually, because in general the composer has a very clear way of writing and there is hardly any crossing-out). The fact that the only available edition of the piece is the Clivis Publications edition has made this commitment even greater.

F. Fleta Polo • Five Concertante duets for violin and piano (Vol. 2) 4 • 5

As a string instrumentalist, Francisco Fleta Pol o has always shown a special fondness of the instruments within this family and they are the protagonists of the majority of his works. In recent years, particularly since 2005, Fleta has composed a series of duet concertos for string instruments and piano: five for violin, five for viola, five for cello and one (in two movements) for double bass. (Clivis published or forthcoming)

Concertante duets for violin and piano 4 and 5 are dedicated in memoriam of Francesc Puertas, a great friend of the composer since the time they studied together in the Conservatory of Barcelona (they both graduated in violin, viola and trumpet), and the predecessor of a lineage of musicians. Far from conjuring the absent friend through nostalgic memories, the nature of the duets conveys the strength and energy that they shared when making music.

Duet number 4 presents an initial movement in which an arpeggiated figure alternates with a rhythmic theme in double chords, whilst the second movement stands out thanks to the use of the violin’s entire tessitura.

ALEJANDRO CIVILOTTI

Alejandro Civilotti premiere at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.

The Spanish-Argentine composer debut AURIS CONCERTUM the symphony for cello and orchestra, at the Teatro Colón, one of the most significant places in Argentina.

The solo part is on the cellist Eduardo Vassallo, soloist of Birmingham Orchestra.

The program shall consist of Villalobos, and Civilotti and Stravinsky will be held on 2 July 2009.

JOAQUIM SERRA, CHORAL ANTHOLOGY

The relatively extensive catalogue of Joaquim Serra’s (1907-1957) composition work represents all the genres. Unfortunately, his early death at the age of 50 has deprived us of the magnitude that the evolution of his creative maturity foretold.

Joaquim Serra was a simple and affable man who was loved by everyone that he came across. As a musician, a brilliant composer and very good pianist, he was always renowned. He was born in Peralada (Alt Empordà). His father, Josep Serra i Bonal, composer of sardanas (traditional Catalan folk songs), influenced his inclination towards music and he showed great natural talent from a very early age. His precocious capability could be seen from his adolescence, when he wrote his first sardana at the age of 14, entitled La primera volada (The first flight). In later years, he composed extensively and consequently explored other forms of using the cobla (traditional Catalan brass band). Interestingly, his last work was a magnificent symphonic poem for cobla entitled Puigsoliu.

With this album, Clivis Publicacions, ever faithful to its laudable commitment to Catalan culture, concludes its publishing project dedicated to the choral work of Joaquim Serra. We can only regret that this selection is limited compared to his full catalogue. Nevertheless, it is very agreeable to once again consider the talent and the effects of his resources, where the treatment of voices reveals the experience of the maestros. They reveal beautiful and surprising contributions of harmonic colour and moving hues, built on structures that are very well adapted to the texts, featuring a noble and high quality.

The anthology incorporates songs originally written for male voices and others for mixed choirs. The songs written for male voices are also presented in the mixed choir version, undertaken with Manuel Oltra’s expertise (except for Capvespre, as the two versions were written by the composer). Three of the songs in the collection are traditional (from Aragon, Extremadura and Jaén) with simple, amusing arrangements that are bursting with freshness. Of the songs for mixed voices, we should highlight Capvespre (“nightfall”, with text by Carles Soldevila) and Idil^.li de la fruita galana (“Idyll of the beautiful fruit”, with text by Joan Maria Guasch), impregnated by the climate that these texts portray, especially the first - a very inspired piece that brushes perfection.

We don’t doubt that this publication will be well received in choral circles and that it will deservedly promote the knowledge and recreation of the songs it encompasses.

Joaquim Serra was born in Peralada (Alt Empordà) in 1907 and died fifty years later in Barcelona. The son of Josep Serra i Bonal, he studied with his father, Lluís Millet and Enric Morera and he wrote his first sardana (a typical Catalan dance) in 1923. He won two "Concepció Rabell" awards, for Trio en mi (1926) and Variacions per a orquestra i piano (1928), in addition to various prizes at the "Sant Jordi" competitions, specifically for Impressions Camperoles (1926), La Fira, Glossa del ball de gitanes and La presó de Lleida.

He wrote approximately fifty outstanding sardanas, such as La primera volada (1921), Infantívola (1922), Tendresa, Joiosa, Rocaborba and Apassionada (all in 1936). Serra’s posthumous piece of work, Puigsoliu was the best of his symphonic poems.

In 1934, he was appointed artistic director of the Associació de Barcelona radio station. He gave a course on orchestration for brass bands in 1948, which he summarised in his book, Tractat d’Instrumentació per a cobla (Instrumentation for brass bands) in 1957.

Prelude

Gestures are what the conductor uses to communicate with the orchestra and to be able to express what he feels about the music it is playing. We will not wax poetical about it. We will only talk about the gestures; we will not talk about styles nor will we give musical examples by established authors.

Gestures must be simple, clear and able to be understood by the orchestra, and easy for the conductor to do, because his thoughts must send orders to the baton quickly, whether he is conducting a symphony in which he is the performer, or whether he is accompanying a violin or piano concerto or a singer, in which case the conductor accompanies the soloist.

Facial expression also helps gestures, which shows us that we need to adjust our entire body, in other words, we need to adapt it so that it goes with the music:

People do not speak about gestures very much, I think it is something that is greatly ignored, and this can be seen and heard when the conduc-tor’s gestures do not correspond to what the orchestra is playing.

Whoever stands in front of a students' orchestra to conduct them and is not suitably trained or prepared, can do a lot of harm to the students and to himself. In fact, when conducting an orchestra there are two very strange things: there are those who believe that they "do not need to learn" and there are also those who believe that they "can teach".
